Our Story
Cape Cares began with a simple belief: no one in our community should have to face a dangerously cold night without a safe, warm place to sleep.
In the winter of 2025–2026, a small group of people came together with a shared concern for neighbors experiencing homelessness. They were determined to make sure Cape Girardeau had a place where people could come in from the cold.
They knew from the beginning they couldn't do it alone. And they shouldn't.
StreetLevel became an essential early partner, bringing relationships and trust already built with many of the people the Warming Center hoped to serve.
Then Grace United Methodist Church opened its doors.
With the support of its pastor and church leadership, Grace gave the Warming Center a place to call home.
Five days later, we welcomed our first 13 guests.
It Started With a Name
That first night, we had name tags ready so guests could label their belongings.
Instead, they put the name tags on themselves.
So we learned their names.
And then we learned their stories.
Throughout that winter, hundreds of volunteers came through our doors. They cooked meals and made coffee. They washed laundry, played cards, listened and laughed. Sometimes they simply sat across the table from people they might never otherwise have met.
Churches, businesses, nonprofits and community organizations all found ways to help. No single person or organization did it all.
The Warming Center worked because a community came together.
But something else happened along the way.
The community wasn't just making the Warming Center better. The Warming Center was making our community better, too.
Strangers became people with names and stories. Assumptions gave way to relationships. We discovered that caring for a neighbor doesn't always require expertise or a professional title.
Sometimes it simply requires showing up.
And sometimes restoring hope starts with something as simple as learning someone's name.
Cape Cares Was Born
That experience became the foundation for Cape Cares, Inc., established in 2026 to carry the work forward. Our purpose isn't to replace the community. It is to help bring the community together.
Our name says exactly who we hope to be:
Cape Cares.
A community that comes together to care for our neighbors.
Our faith teaches us to love one another. It reminds us that when we welcome the stranger, feed someone who is hungry, offer warmth to someone who is cold or simply sit across the table and listen, we are serving Christ.
We don't come as people who stand above those we serve. We come as neighbors and equals. Every person who walks through our doors has a story and is worthy of dignity and love.
Our work begins with meeting immediate needs, but we hope it doesn't end there. We want to help people move toward greater stability and renewed hope while honoring the dignity they already possess.
We also believe this work can change our community.
Because when we stop seeing a label and begin seeing the person sitting across the table, something changes.
We learn a name.
We hear a story.
We recognize a neighbor.
And sometimes we discover that the person we thought we came to serve has changed us, too.
A community that knows its neighbors.
A community that shows up.
Because Cape Cares.
